How we learned to ship frozen meat!
When we launched ChopLocal in 2020, one of the first things we had to learn was how to ship frozen meat.
Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of resources out there, and most recommended using dry ice to ship meat.
Now, for farmers in rural areas, like us, dry ice can be hard to find and down-right expensive. So we started to explore ways to ship without dry ice.
Jared led the charge on Operation Shipping Frozen Meat, and started by collecting samples of different coolers and ice and gel packs.
Then, he packaged up some frozen meat, and left it in a hot area for a couple of days. He used a thermometer to track the temperature over time. (The thermometer has a USB end and can be plugged into a computer to see a chart of the temp.)
By testing several boxes of meat this way, Jared came up with a game-plan.
Then, he started shipping his frozen meat. He tested his packaging and coolant in the real world. And thankfully, it worked pretty well!
Since that time, we've worked with hundreds of niche meat businesses and processed tens of thousands of transactions on ChopLocal. Our vendors have used this same menthod to ship frozen meat with incredible success!
